In 1965 an Indiana rock band named the McCoys scored two huge hit records. The first “Hang on Sloopy” was #1 on the Hot 100 and is the official rock song of the state of Ohio (not sure how that happened). The McCoys’ second record, “Fever”, was also a big hit, climbing to #7 on the hot 100 the same year. The song was a cover of an earlier version by Peggy Lee, but the McCoys version outsold the original. The band had several other records on the hot 100 the next three years, finally disbanding in 1968. But this is another instance of the public’s selective memory, one song remembered and the rest – forgotten. “Fever” is a true forgotten oldie.
