I saw the Gentrys for the first time on TV, on Ted Mack’s Original Amateur Hour in 1964. The seven piece band was the first rock band appearing on Ted’s show, and the old guy responded with a comment about how a barber could make a fortune right here on this stage. Anyway, the band’s appearance attracted a record contract and a year later The Gentrys scored a major hit with “Keep On Dancing”, which reached #4 on the Hot 100. They were very popular on tour for the next few years but never scored another top 40 hit, finally disbanding in the 70’s, although they have reformed for reunion events several times. Today their big hit is just another forgotten oldie.
