In 1968, Scottish singer Donovan had an international hit with “Atlantis” which reached #7 on the USA’s Hot 100. Based entirely on a mystical Atlantis seeking to send teachers to improve countries around the world, the song surprised record execs with it’s success… especially since the first third of the song is lyrics that are spoken rather than sung. The song struck a chord with young people who decided it had a counter-cultural message and became a hippie anthem of sorts… i.e. Atlantis was perfect, let’s try to be perfect too. Despite the silliness, it’s quite a good song, but it’s another forgotten oldie today.
