In 1969, Del Shannon discovered a group in a nightclub in Los Angeles, within six months they had a national tour, a hit album, and a million selling, top five hit record with the Burt Bacharach song “Baby It’s You”. And actually, the Smith version outsold previous hit versions of the song by both the Shirelles and the Beatles. But most of the band’s material was covers of hit records, and after a second album and a couple of very minor releases that barely reached the Hot 100, Smith broke up. But their big hit was wonderful, “Baby It’s You” was actively on the radio from July through October, a good long time for a current single. It’s always been one of my favorites, and I hate that it’s just another forgotten oldie.
