In 1963 Bill Medley of the Righteous Brothers wrote a song called “Little Latin Lupe Lu”. The duo released it as a single and it became their first hit, even though it fell short of the top 40 on the Hot 100. Over the years several bands had success with the song, The Chancellors, The Kingsmen and Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels. Others have played and recorded the song as well, Springsteen still uses it in his live show.
For me, the song is important because it served as a springboard for The Righteous Brothers. It’s a song you’d probably expect to be a forgotten oldie, but it has history and I love the Righteous Brothers’ version.
