Over the past week I re-watched a few James Bond movies; Skyfall, Goldfinger, Moonraker, The Spy Who Loved Me, Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace. I’ve done this a few times, simply put I love all the 007 movies and re-watch them pretty regularly but lately I’ve noticed the theme songs more and more and started wondering why some are so good, and some are so awful.
Just look at the movies I mentioned… the Skyfall theme by Adele is very good (#8 hot 100), Goldfinger by Shirley Bassey (#8 hot 100) is the best ever, and Nobody Does It Better by Carly Simon (the theme song from The Spy Who Loved Me, #2 on the Hot 100) is also very, very good. But then you get to Moonraker which tries really hard to be good and gets a credible performance by Shirley Bassey but face it has just plain silly lyrics and you realize not all Bond themes are golden (didn’t make it to the hot 100 either). A big step down is the theme from Casino Royale, You Know My Name performed by Chris Cornell (#79 hot 100)… here you have a song that is just awful no matter how you look at it, I’m even shuddering as I type this. But wait, I forgot the last theme song of the six movies I watched… Quantum of Solace. The title is Another Way To Die and it’s performed by Jack White and Alicia Keys so it should be good, right? Wrong, this song is kind of like a fingernail on a blackboard, it just makes you cringe. Horns come in where they don’t belong, the vocals don’t work and the song becomes screechy… like a blackboard (#81 hot 100).
Anyway, I think I’ll watch a few more 007 movies this week… and listen to the theme songs!
