1963 The Beach Boys’ “Surfer Girl”, the first song ever written by Brian Wilson, peaks at #7 on the Billboard Pop chart. The single would achieve Gold Record status later in the year and reach #13 in the UK.

1968 Roy Orbison’s two sons, Roy Jr. (11) and Tony (6), are killed in a fire at his Hendersonville, Tennessee home while he is on tour in England. The kids were apparently playing with an aerosol can in the basement when their grandfather attempted to demonstrate the danger by touching his cigarette lighter to the spray, and things went horribly awry.
