In 1967 the Monkees were flying high, their TV show was still going strong and their records were consistently big sellers. When Pleasant Valley Sunday hit #1 the B-side was also getting a lot of air-play. So much so that it also became a huge hit, and “Words” went all the way to #11 on the hot 100. Despite the fact that the song still had studio musicians, it was one of their first hits with instruments mostly played by the band members themselves. Today though, “Words” is a forgotten oldie.
