If I asked you what American performer continued to flourish despite the British Invasion, had 16 top 40 hits in the USA and 22 in Britain, wrote many of his own hits and several for other artists, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002, who would you guess? This guy even played piano for the Rolling Stones on several records and recorded two successful country albums with George Jones. I bet nobody answered Gene Pitney. He’s not only the owner of today’s forgotten oldie, he’s also a forgotten artist. To me he should be regarded as a legend… heck, he is a legend. The song “It Hurts To Be In Love” reached #7 on the hot 100 in mid 1964, right in the middle of the British Invasion and Beatlemania. Today, both Gene and this great song are forgotten.
