How’s that for a holiday? And to be honest, the full title of this May 15th holiday is “Relive Your Past By Listening To The First Music You Ever Bought No Matter What It Was No Excuses Day”. Now that’s the longest title for a holiday this year!
So do you remember the first music you ever bought? I do, it was Roy Orbison’s Greatest Hits on Monument Records. The exact album pictured. I was just starting to get into music and the radio, and my mother warned me that I was not allowed to play any 45 records on the big, fancy hi-fi in the living room, only 33 1/3 LP’s. So my first record was an album. $2.49 at the local Ben Franklin in mono, not stereo. I played the heck out of it… and then the British Invasion happened and I don’t think I ever listened to it again. I don’t have it anymore, but I still have the album I traded it for… Introducing The Beatles on Veejay Records.
In honor of the holiday, I’ve been listening to some of the songs from the Roy Orbison album. Not surprising, the music of Roy Orbison is still darned good, 56 years later.
