New research shows that cell phones and laptops in the classroom can lower students’ grades. In a recent study, two groups were enrolled in the same course and were taught the same material by the same instructor in the same classroom. But only one group was allowed to have laptops and cell phones open for non-classroom purposes. And you guessed it, the group with the technology got worse grades! The study found that when attention is divided between the lesson being taught and the electronic device, the retention of the lesson is reduced, resulting in poorer grades.
