The story of the Cryan Shames is a sad one. They were an extremely talented garage band from Hinsdale, Illinois, a Western suburb of Chicago. From 1966 to 1969 they struggled to get that breakthrough national hit, but it never happened. Meanwhile, in the Midwest the Cryan Shames ruled, from the Twin Cities to Cleveland their records got heavy airplay and when the Hot 100 listed one of their records at #65 or 70, in the midwest the song was usually in the top ten. Today’s forgotten oldie is a great example, “It Could Be We’re In Love”, in 1967 Billboard had the song at #85, Cashbox had it at#65, and Chicago radio stations had it at #1. I saw the Cryan Shames perform twice and their shows were amazing, with an energy that few other bands could match. And those awesome vocals… today’s forgotten oldie proves that. Not surprisingly, the Cryan Shames are a big hit on the oldies tours and still perform today.
