We all know the story, to protest her husband’s policies, Lady Godiva rode naked on a horse through Coventry England, and nobody peeked. So in 1966, Peter & Gordon modernized the story and put it into song, and scored a top ten international hit with the result. The song “Lady Godiva” hit #6 on the Hot 100 in 1966, and was #1 in both Australia and Canada, while scoring chart appearances in many countries. The song was similar to the bawdy, music hall style hits of Hermans Hermits, and a definite stylistic shift for Peter & Gordon. It sold a million copies, but turned out to be the duo’s last hit in the UK. Today the song is sadly VERY forgotten, it deserves better.
