Today’s forgotten oldie is from an artist that’s probably remembered more for his comedy appearances on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, than for his music. Jim Stafford is a very talented, extremely interesting guy, he has had several hit records, written movie screenplays, written for television, hosted and appeared on TV shows, appeared in several movies, and today headlines the show at his own theater in Branson, Missouri. Jim Stafford just likes to be active. His biggest hit record was “Spiders and Snakes” which climbed to #3 on the hot 100 in 1973. Like everything else Jim does, the song is fun… and yet you can tell that Stafford has musical talent. Interestingly, his high school band included Gram Parsons (later member of the Byrds and Flying Burrito Brothers), and Kent LaVole, later a record star known as Lobo. Today, except at his shows, Jim Stafford’s song is another forgotten oldie.
