Today’s forgotten oldie is a song written by Buddy Holly for his wife Elena and recorded just before his death. Although Buddy had a minor hit with the song in England, it was never a hit for him in the USA. However, in 1965 the British duo Peter & Gordon released their version and it climbed to #14 on the hot 100 in the USA, and to #2 in England. The song is “True Love Ways” and besides Peter & Gordon, it has since been recorded by many artists, including Joan Jett, Bobby Vee, Elvis Costello, Jackson Browne, and even some country artists. Mickey Gilley took his version to #1 on the country chart in 1985. Peter & Gordon made the song a classic, Gordon Waller’s lead vocal is perfect for the song and I always thought Buddy Holly would love their version. It’s a very pretty song, and it was a staple at weddings for several years, but today it’s just another forgotten oldie.
